Recently, doctors at Government Hospital for Women and Children, Egmore, for the first time, removed a 20-kg tumor from one of the ovaries of a 51-year-old of Chromepet in Chennai. The tumour developed to a huge size over seven years, said the doctors. In the 175-year history of the hospital, there is no record of doctors removing such a tumor.

S Rathi was admitted on 16th November and the surgery was performed on December 10. She had complained that her stomach was swelling every day and a private hospital took a scan and referred her to this government hospital. After two hours of surgery, doctors could remove the tumor without damaging it. The tumor was then sent for biopsy.

Speaking to reporters, Seethalakshmi, Professor, Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the hospital, said that the size of the patient’s stomach was double that of a full-term pregnant woman. Tumor was found on the left ovary. Ovary tumors are commonly seen among women in the age group of 45-60, who reach menopause. Therefore, regular check-ups should be done to diagnose it early.

Seethalakshmi, who performed the surgery, said that as they did not knew the tumor type, precaution was taken to prevent any damage to it as in the case of cancerous tumor it can recur if fluids are spilled in the body. The tumor was pressing liver, small intestine, large intestine, uterus and other surrounding parts.

Sampath Kumari, Director and Superintendent, Government Hospital for Women and Children said that the patient’s body weight was 50 kg before the surgery and was reduced to 30 kg after the tumor was removed.

In medical literature, no such case had been reported earlier from India. In medical literature, it is found in 1922, 148.6 kg, in 1963, 79.4 kg in 2003, 50 kg and another 30 to 40 kgs of tumor cases were reported from other countries. But, there was no such case from India.
