5 children in Kolhapur suffer convulsions with repeat dose of antibiotics

Five children, aged between 4 and 10 years, had suffered convulsions after they were administered repeat doses of antibiotics in Kolhapur.

The children are from the anganwadi, primary and secondary schools of the Gadhinglaj and Ajaratalukas of Kolhapur. Few days ago, the children were diagnosed with urinary system-related diseases and were taken at the sub-district hospital at Gadhinglaj. The surgeries and other necessary medical processes were carried out on these children and they were kept under observation. The surgeries were also performed between December 13 and December 15. According to health officials, the children were given repeated doses of antibiotics and this resulted in convulsions in them.

In a convulsion, a patient loses consciousness and the muscles get relaxed. This is the first stage of seizure, in which the rapid movement with loss of consciousness is observed. The children’s family got worried after the children developed convulsions.

B C Kempi-Patil, the dean of the CPR Hospital, said that the children were brought with convulsions. They put them in emergency care and after the treatment, they were able to make them stable. They were told that the repeat dose of antibiotics, with separate batch numbers, were administered to the children. They are investigating further and the action will be taken accordingly.

The children who suffered convulsions have been identified as Chaitanya Sunil Khavare (9) from Mahagaon village, Samarth Ramchandra Kolhe (4) from Abaladevi, Rohit Kashinath Sheshnaik (10) from Dundge village, Sarvesh Digambar Patil (4) from Gavse village and Samarth Baburao Gurave (8) from Khanapur.

Dilip Ambole, the medical officer of the sub-district hospital, Gadhinglaj, said that the parents are demanding action. They are going to investigate and have sought a report, based on which, further action will be taken.
