A doctor at Ramanathapuram Government Hospital in Maduraihas been placed under suspension after aninvestigation done by a special team into the death of a pregnant woman and her foetus at the hospital during delivery.
On December 29, 23-year-old pregnant woman Keerthika and her foetus died due to a fatal allergic reaction that developed after she was administered a drug to induce labour pain at the hospital. After this, the angry relatives of Keerthika protested outside the hospital alleging medical negligence by doctors and an inquiry was initiated.
A state team reporting directly to Tamil Nadu health secretary Dr Beela Rajesh, which comprised of a paediatrician, gynaecologist and an anaesthetist, conducted an inquiry into the incident at the hospital till the late hours on December 30. Subsequently, on December 31 at 6 pm, a suspension order was issued to Dr Manimozhi, who had attended to the patient. A source from the health department said that even though medical negligence has not been established as the reason for the suspension, the doctor has to take responsibility because the case has resulted in deaths. Investigation discovered that the doctor was not present during the procedure for 10 minutes.
Sources from the Ramanathapuram GH said that the best possible treatment was given to the patient.Whereas the health department sources said that the allergic reaction was not the only cause for the death of the woman and the foetus.
