32-year-old patient jumps from Calcutta Medical College in front of medical staff

On Wednesday, a 32-year-old patient died after he allegedly jumped off the fifth floor of a building at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata in front of doctors and nurses.

Police said that Giasuddin Mondal was admitted at the neuro medicine ward and jumped off the newly-constructed super speciality building of the hospital around 10.45 am when doctors were on a regular round.

CMCH superintendent Indranil Biswas said that the Mondal was admitted last evening and was suffering from suspected autoimmune encephalitis syndromes that causes altered mentality and memory decline. Also division of thoughts were present in him.

He further said that he jumped off the fifth floor after opening a windowpane in presence of doctors and nurses there. While doing so, he tore a doctors shirt and pushed him back before jumping off.

A senior officer of the Bowbazar Police Station said that Mondal was severely injured and declared dead when taken to the emergency ward.

Police said that an internal committee has been set up by the CMCH to look into the matter. A case has been lodged at the Bowbazar Police Station and Mondals body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
