MMC chief mentions that complaints against doctors will soon become a norm

On Saturday, Dr Shivkumar Utture, President of Maharashtra Medical council (MMC) said that as the doctor-patient relationship now termed ‘consumer and service provider’, episodes of patients or their family members having complaints against doctors in case of complications are increasing. It will be more widespread in days to come and it would become a norm. In such circumstances, proper documentation can be the only option and saviour for doctors.

He said that patients allege that doctors ask for unnecessary diagnostic tests. Many patients feel that new generation doctors don’t have the clinical acumen which the senior doctors had.  However, the doctors follow evidence-based practice and all possible investigations are required before proper diagnosis.

Dr Utture had advised the doctors that a proper documentation of every investigation and why it was needed should be done. A proper consent in written form from the patient before the investigation and surgical procedures should be taken as it will help in the court of law in future.

Dr Utture was addressing in the inaugural function of VAPICON 2020 in Nagpur, an annual conference of Association of Physicians of India (API) Vidarbha Chapter. VAPICON is the most important event in the academic calendar of API Vidarbha Chapter and the theme of 2020 was “We make healers”.

The conference highlighted on the methodology to various common clinical problems in daily practice. Case-based discussions on several topics were done and also lectures by prominent faculties on wide-ranging topics were organized.

Organizing Chairman of the event Dr Prabhakar K Deshpande, organizing Secretary Dr Vinod Khandait, Treasurer Dr Suhas Kanphade were on the podium. Scientific committee headed by Dr Ramesh Mundle organized the sessions. Dr Sharad N Deshmukh, Dr Pradeep Mishra, Dr Nikhil Balankhe were the conference coordinators. Dr Gira Soni, Dr Swapna Khanzode, Dr Sudhir Chafle, Dr Rekha Joshi were the in-charges of the conference sessions.
