Government doctor shot dead in broad day-light in Nalanda

On Thursday, a government doctor was shot dead in Nalanda, Bihar as he was on his way to a primary health centre on a motorbike. The deceased is a relative of former Harnaut JD (U) MLA Sunil Kumar.

A police officer said that Dr Priyaranjan Kumar’s bike was stopped around 11am by some offenders who were also on bikes and they fired four bullets into his chest. The doctor was on his way to Gokul Math additional primary health centre (APHC) in Rahui block of the district.

No sooner the news spread, the doctors left their work at Biharsharif sadar hospital and other government hospitals and rushed to the hospital to express solidarity for the family of the deceased doctor.

Nalanda SP Nilesh Kumar said that it was too early to comment anything on this incident. The SP along with Biharsharif SDPO Imran Perwez and other police officers reached the spot and shifted the doctor’s body to Biharsharif Sadar hospital for post mortem.

The deceased doctor, a native of Nosra village under Noorsarai block in Nalanda, is survived by his wife and an 8 year old son Tanmoy.

Former MLA Sunil Kumar told TOI that the doctor living in his in-laws house in Naisarai locality under Bihasharif Town police station area. He was a gentleman and had no enmity with anyone. Doctors across the state are disturbed on this daylight murder.

Bihar state unit of Indian Medical Association (IMA) held an emergent meeting to discuss this situation, as the news of Dr Priyadarshi’s murder reached Patna. The meeting was managed by IMA state president Dr Bimal Kumar Karak, who strongly condemned the ruthless murder of Dr Priyadarshi. IMA state secretary Dr Sunil Kumar said that they have urged the state government to make sure the arrest of the attackers within 72 hours, or else the IMA would be forced to announce a state-wide protest for arrest of the murderers.

Troubled over the murder case, many of government and private doctors and relatives of the deceased blocked Patna-Ranchi main road near Hospital Mor for an hour in the evening and insisted the arrest of the criminals in addition to a government job for the widow of the deceased doctor and a compensation of Rs 2 crore to the family. They lifted the blockade when Nalanda DM Yogendra Kumar Singh guaranteed them of all the possible help.

Nalanda district IMA president Dr Shyam Bihari Singh said that the law and order has totally collapsed in the state.
