AIIMS designated to be the nodal centre for coronavirus treatment in India

For setting up of isolation beds in the acute management of coronavirus patients, the health ministry has requested AIIMS to designate a part of the new emergency wing at its trauma centre, known as Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre.

Officials said that the isolation facility would have a capacity to admit almost 20 patients at a time. The patients will be sent here and then will be transferred to National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Jhajjar.

Six other AIIMS in Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Patna, Jodhpur Raipur and Rishikesh have also been instructed to be ready with 12-15 isolation beds for coronavirus patients. The officials said that the number also be increased up to 30 if need arises.

Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Puducherry is been asked to set apart beds for isolation of patients.

On Sunday, Union health minister Harsh Vardhan, had a meeting with Poonam Khetrapal Singh, the regional director of WHO, said that he explained her the widespread capacity building efforts as a part of the government’s mission-mode preparation. He guaranteed her that India is using speed, scale and determination together with best practices to prevent coronavirus.

PM Narendra Modi has also reviewed the coronavirus position in the country in a meeting done with officials on Saturday and asked them to find locations for appropriate quarantine facilities and also make provisions for critical care if in case there is further spread of the disease.

In Delhi, six private hospitals, including Max super speciality, Apollo and BLK hospital, has created isolation wards. In Gurugram, Medanta Medicity also has created an isolation ward where 14 out of 16 Italian nationals positive with coronavirus are being treated.

A WHO-China Joint Mission Report recently released has shown that 14% develop severe symptoms such as shortness of breath and 6% turn critical with symptoms such as respiratory failure, septic shock and/or multi-organ dysfunction or failure, whereas 80% cases are mild to moderate.
