Cissus quadrangularis is rich in anabolic steroids, calcium, and phosphorus. Stem extracts of the herb are often used for early repair of fractures.
In a case report published in the International Journal of Research in Orthopaedics, authors assessed the effect of C. quandrangularis in advancing fracture union and reduction in pain and swelling.
A 26-year-old male had a history of fall from two wheeler. He injured his left thumb and had pain and complained of inability to move it. Radiographic examination revealed left Bennett’s fracture with subluxation. The patient was subjected to closed reduction internal fixation (CRIF) with k-wiring under block. He was also prescribed C. quadrangularis once daily along with calcium starting from the day of surgery.
Pain and swelling showed gradual reduction. X-ray at the 6th week follow-up revealed union of fracture with good amount of callus.
Authors stated that the patient exhibited considerable increase in the rate of fracture union and reduction in pain and swelling with oral administration of C. quadrangularis for 6 weeks. The herb can therefore be used as a supplement in different types of fractures to hasten the healing process.
