A study was recently conducted to determine the risk factors associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in nondiabetics in South India. Overall, 345 asymptomatic participants were recruited in the study. The study was conducted from January 2014 to December 2017. All participants were subjected to risk factor evaluation, fasting serum lipid profile, C-reactive protein (CRP), hemoglobin A1c, liver function test, and abdominal ultrasound.

Of the 345 participants, 213 were male (71%). The mean age of the participants was 58.4±11.1 years, with age range being 24-68 years. NAFLD was present in 22% of the studied subjects. Risk factor evaluation revealed that 31% had hypertension, 25.7% smoked, 15% were overweight, 24.9% were obese, and 32.7% had dyslipidemia.

Mean CRP was 12.7±9.5 mg/l. Factors that had a significant association with NAFLD included high γ-glutamyl transferase levels, elevated CRP levels, obesity (45, 59.2%), high total cholesterol (49, 64.4%), low levels of high-density lipoprotein (28, 36.8%), high levels of low-density lipoprotein (27, 35.5%), and high triglycerides (31, 40.7%). Following adjustment using multiple regression analysis, obesity, high total cholesterol, low high-density lipoprotein, high low-density lipoprotein, high triglycerides, and raised CRP levels had a significant association with NAFLD.

Obesity, CRP positivity, and dyslipidemia were thus found to have an independent association with NAFLD in nondiabetic Indian patients.
