Cissus quadrangularis is an indigenous herb well-known for its fracture healing properties. The herb possesses phytoestrogenic steroids, ascorbic acid, carotene, calcium and anabolic steroids. It has been reported that the plant extract is safe even at higher dose for a prolonged period of time.

Rajagopalan et al have reported a case in the Journal of Complementary Medicine and Alternative Healthcare wherein they assessed the effect of C. quadrangularis in advancing healing of bone fracture by reducing pain and swelling. A 78-year-old female presented with swelling and pain in left wrist after a fall from the staircase at her home. The patient was non-diabetic and her blood pressure was normal. X-ray revealed Colles fracture in left hand. Patient was subjected to closed reduction under local anesthesia. She was advised to take rest and was prescribed C. quadrangularis besides calcium supplement.

Pain and swelling showed gradual reduction and were completely relieved after 30 days. X ray examination done on the 30th day revealed bone healing. The rate of healing in the bone fracture was hastened in this patient with a decrease in pain and swelling with oral administration of C. quadrangularis for 30 days.

The case report thus clearly shows the benefits of using C. quadrangularis to accelerate fracture healing.
