Odisha to become the 1st state for extending the lockdown till 30th April

On Thursday, Odisha Government extended the COVID-19 lockdown till 30th April and become the first state to do so. The closure of educational institutions was also extended till 17th June. The decision was taken in the states cabinet meeting that was held through video conference.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced a nationwide 21-day lockdown till 14th April due to COVID-19 spread. Odisha Cabinet had also recommended the Union Government to extend the lockdown period. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has requested Centre not to start train and air services till 30th April.

An official release said that a record of one lakh rapid testing has been planned as a preventive measure in possible hotspots.

Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, MGNREGS related activities will be assisted by following social distancing standards and free movement of goods transport will be permitted in Odisha.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the situation due to COVID-19 in the country is very similar to a "social emergency". Everyone should continue to stay alert in a meeting with floor leaders of political parties in Parliament held via video conferencing.

Odisha has reported 42 positive coronavirus cases and 2 people are cured/discharged or migrated while one death has been confirmed.

As per the Health Ministry, the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases rose to 5,734 on Thursday. It includes 5,095 active cases, whereas 472 people have either been cured or discharged and 166 deaths are reported.
