India crosses the 7,000-mark of coronavirus cases, death count reaches 239

In last 24 hours, India has crossed 7,000-mark with the states confirming over 1,000 cases of COVID-19. This is the highest number of cases witnessed in a single day in India ever since the coronavirus pandemic occurred. According to ministry of health and welfare, the death count has reached more than 200.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in India is at 7,447 and 6,556 active cases across the states. Almost 643 patients are recovered from the disease. 40 deaths has been reported in last 24 hours, taking the total count of deaths in India to 239.

Maharashtra remains the worst affected state with more than 1,500 cases. Mumbai, which is the financial capital of India, has reported over 800 cases since the outbreak. The death count in Maharashtra has reached to 110. The state accounts for over 46% COVID-19 deaths in the country.

Tamil Nadu has also witnessed a sudden increase in coronavirus cases in past few days. Almost 911 people were tested positive for the virus. Delhi has reported 903 coronavirus confirmed cases. More than 20 cases were reported in Uttar Pradesh, taking the total count in the state to 431. The total number of cases in Rajasthan has reached to 553. Madhya Pradesh has confirmed 435 cases and 33 deaths. Kerala reported 364 cases. At least 67 people were reported positive in Gujarat in last 24 hours. The total count in Gujarat has reached to 308.

At present, India is under 21-day nationwide lockdown till 14th April to prevent the coronavirus spread in the country. Several states like Odisha and Punjab has already extended the lockdown period till month end due to the increasing numbers.

Health ministry repeated that there is no community transmission of the coronavirus in India yet.

Globally, the number of fatalities from the COVID-19 pandemic has reached to 100,859. More than 1.6 million cases are reported world-wide ever since the epidemic first emerged. Italy, had recorded its first death in late February and had the most fatalities with 18,849 from 147,577 infections. The US has 500,399 cases of the coronavirus. According to data from Johns Hopkins University, the national death count in US has passed 18,000. New York is the epicenter of the countrys outbreak, with almost 174,481 confirmed cases statewide with 7,884 deaths.
