Previous studies have reported contradictory results about serum 25 hydroxy vitamin D (25-OH vitamin D) levels and its association with acne; while some claimed that acne lesion might improve with vitamin D supplementation.

The objective of a new study published in Dermatologic Therapy was to assess serum 25-OH vitamin D levels in acne patients and to identify their relation with the disease severity.

The present study included 134 acne patients and 129 controls. The acne disease severity was identified with the Global Acne Grading Scale (GAGS) scores and serum 25-OH vitamin D levels were measured in all groups.

The results showed that serum 25-OH vitamin D levels were significantly lower in acne patients than in controls. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was significantly higher in the acne group than in the control group. Additionally, there was a negative-strong statistically significant correlation between serum 25-OH vitamin D levels and GAGS scores in the patient group.

Hence, the evaluation of serum 25-OH vitamin D levels in acne patients was recommended. It was further stated that vitamin D supplementations could be considered as a treatment option for acne in future studies.
