Updates on COVID-19, India registers highest surge in coronavirus deaths

Till 5th May, as reported to WHO, there are 35, 25,116 confirmed positive cases, that includes 2, 43,540 deaths worldwide. On Tuesday, India has registered its highest peak in coronavirus cases and deaths with 3,875 cases and 194 deaths in the last 24 hours.

Joint Secretary in the Ministry Lav Agarwal explained that the increase in numbers are due to certain states were not updating regularly and they had to convince them to release their backlog and therefore has resulted in a huge spike in numbers.

He also stated that states/UTs are instructed to effectively implement contact tracing with active search of cases and clinical management of cases.

On 6th May, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that 49,391 are tested positive and the death count has reached at 1,694.

On Tuesday, a 77-year-old man from Bhubaneswar died, taking the death count in Odisha to 2. Total cases has reached 177, as a person from Surat has returned testing positive in Ganjam district.

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump said that U.S. has flattened coronavirus curve and the country is currently in the next stage of the battle and it is a “very safe phased and gradual reopening”. President Donald Trump has also urged China to be transparent about the origins of the novel coronavirus outbreak which has killed more than a quarter of a million people from the time when it originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan last year in December. He said the United States would release a report soon giving details of the origins of the virus.

Punjab, Haryana and Tamil Nadu observed a spike in the rate of growth of positive cases in the last week, as cases in Punjab were doubling every three days. The rate of growth of coronavirus cases in Kerala has slowed down even more, which indicates an effective containment of the spread. Both confirmed cases and fatalities are rapidly increasing in Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Jammu & Kashmir has reported 15 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, taking the total number of cases to 741.

The Centre has informed the Supreme Court that a decision needs to been taken to bring back the stranded Indian citizens in Nepal due to the coronavirus pandemic after 7th May.

Justice Ashok Bhushan, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that the government will take required steps to send back Nepalese citizens who are stuck in India.
