India crosses 50k COVID-19 cases, highest spike of 3600 cases in a single day

On Wednesday, India had crossed the 50,000 mark and has broken the 3,000-figure record in its daily tally for the first time. 3,602 new patients were reported in a single day, which is the highest in a day since the outbreak of the pandemic. The total number of positive coronavirus cases in the country has reached to 52,935.

It took 5 days to cover the 30,000-mark to the 40,000-mark and the following 10,000 cases in the country were added in only three days, which is alarmingly. The death count on Wednesday was 93 that was less than the previous day. Maharashtra reported 1,233 new cases, taking the total count to 16,758. The state recorded 34 deaths, taking the death count to 651. Maharashtra accounts for 36.6% of the total 1777 fatalities in India.

Delhi reported 428 number of cases in a day taking the total number of coronavirus patients to 5,532. One death was reported taking the count to 65.

Gujarat reported 28 new deaths out of which 25 deaths were from Ahmedabad alone. The total state death count has reached to 396. 380 new cases have been reported taking the state’s count to 6,625. The situation in Ahmedabad is grim as the administration has banned sale of grocery, vegetables and fruits from Thursday till 15th May. Only milk and medicines sale are allowed.

Municipal commissioner Mukesh Kumar said in a notification that super spreaders working in shops such as vegetables, fruits, grocery, supermarkets, provisions, ice-cream parlours and people who are engaged in home delivery of these items as well as app-based food delivery services can become a potent source of infection for many other people.

West Bengal had accounted for 79 deaths on Tuesday and reported four deaths on Wednesday, taking the state count to 144. Madhya Pradesh recorded 9 deaths, Rajasthan and UP 4 each, Andhra Pradesh 3, Tamil Nadu and Punjab 2 each and Haryana, Delhi and Odisha 1 each.

Tamil Nadu had a big surge in coronavirus infections, with 771 people being tested positive, 324 of them in Chennai and 188 in Ariyalur. Senior officials stated that the huge increase was because of focused testing of “probable” cases from the cluster in Koyambedu that has a huge vegetable market.

Haryana’s coronavirus count has reached 595 with 46 new cases, including 36 cases from NCR districts. Gurugram has 20 new cases followed by Jhajjar, Sonipat, Panipat and Faridabad with 6, 3, 5 and 2 cases, respectively.

Rajasthan reported 4 deaths on Wednesday that was lower than the record 12 deaths the previous day. The number of new cases reached by 159 on Wednesday as compared to 97 the previous day. The total number of cases in the state are 3317 whereas the death toll is 93. Among the news confirmed cases are 30 BSF jawans from Jodhpur who were positioned in the Jama Masjid area of Delhi in the later March when the Tablighi Jamaat controversy exploded.

In Tripura, 22 more BSF jawans were tested positive, taking the state count to 64. Of these, 62 are BSF personnel along with their family members.

UP reported 118 news cases, taking the state count to 2,998. Four more deaths were recorded taking the state’s count to 60. 143 patients were sent home after recovery in the last 24 hours in UP.

In Andhra Pradesh, 3 more deaths were reported and 60 others were tested positive for COVID-19.

Odisha reported a 2nd fatality, as a 77-yr-old man died in Bhubaneswar and nine more patients tested positive, taking the state’s count to 185.

In Kerala, no fresh cases were reported from the state on Wednesday, which is a positive news. Only 30 active cases are present in Kerala out of the total 502 reported.
