On Monday, after 109 days the first person tested positive for coronavirus in India, the total number of cases has crossed the 1-lakh mark, as with the number of infections being doubled only in 12 days. It has become a cause of concern for the authorities due to the spread of the virus and the surge in cases in recent days. On Monday, 4,713 new cases were reported from across the country, which is the third highest in a single day so far. Maharashtra, the worst affected state has reported more than 2,000 cases (2,033) for the consecutive second day. Almost 24 states/UTs reported fresh cases during the day.
On a good note, the number of recovered people from the infection is gradually increasing. On Monday, it was 38,908 with the recovery rate of 38.8%. India’s death rate is relatively low at 3.1%, with 3,103 fatalities from the coronavirus till now.
India has entered phase 4 of lockdown as the number of cases was still rising daily, which indicates that the infection was about to peak. On Monday, the numbers of new cases were also high in Tamil Nadu (536 cases), Gujarat (366 cases), Delhi (299 cases), Madhya Pradesh (254 cases), Uttar Pradesh (177 cases) and Bihar (103 cases).
Rajasthan and Karnataka also reported their highest single-day rise in cases, with 305 and 99 cases, respectively. West Bengal (148 cases), and J&K (106 cases) also reported their highest numbers.
The death toll remained above 100 for the 4th straight day, as 131 deaths were recorded from the virus on Monday. Maharashtra recorded the highest 51 deaths, which includes 23 from Mumbai, whereas Gujarat recorded 35 fatalities, with 31 deaths from Ahmedabad alone. The death toll in Delhi was 12. Till now, Mumbai has recorded the highest number of coronavirus deaths at 757 whereas Ahmedabad has recorded 524 deaths. Gujarat’s financial capital has double the death rate than the Maharashtra. Ahmedabad recorded a death rate of 6.22% as compared to Mumbai’s rate of 3.64%.
Maharashtra recorded 2,033 cases the second-highest count in a single day. The state’s total count reached 35,086, as Mumbai reported more than 1,000 cases for the 2nd day in a row (1,185) to break the 21,000 mark with 21,335 cases.
5 doctors and 55 police personnel are among the 106 people who tested positive for the coronavirus in J&K. 4 of these doctors were treating a COVID-19 positive woman who died of co-morbidities on Sunday.
Tamil Nadu also reported 3 deaths and 536 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, as people who returned from Maharashtra were tested positive in various districts. The state has been criticised for decreasing the number of tests in the last week by epidemiologists, doctors and political leaders.
In Uttar Pradesh, almost 177 new cases were reported which include 31 cases in Gautam Budh Nagar, taking the state’s total count to 4,649. The state also reported 6 deaths, including 2 migrant workers, taking the death toll to 118.
