India records over 5,200 COVID-19 cases, a biggest single day jump

On Tuesday, more than 5,200 new COVID-19 cases were reported from across the country, only after a day India’s total coronavirus count had crossed the 1 lakh mark. It is the biggest single-day leap in infections till now, while almost five states had added the highest number of COVID-19 patients to the total tally.

On Tuesday, 146 deaths from the coronavirus were reported by the states, the third highest till date. Maharashtra reported its highest single-day toll of 76, out of which 43 deaths were in Mumbai alone, followed by Gujarat with 25 deaths.

Maharashtra reported more than 2,000 fresh cases for the 3rd day in a row. Out of the 2,127 new infections, 1,411 cases were detected in Mumbai. This was Maharashtra’s, and Mumbai’s, 2nd highest count of cases in a single day.

In the meantime, the number of recovered patients from the infection crossed 40,000 on Tuesday, taking the count to 42,071 by the end of the day. The national recovery rate from the coronavirus has reached to 39.8%.

Tamil Nadu too reported the second highest number of new cases among all the other states, with 688 new COVID-19 cases. People who are returning home to the state are adding to Tamil Nadu’s total count of cases. 23 passengers of just one flight from Dubai were tested positive on Tuesday. Out of the new cases, 87 people had arrived from abroad or other states. Chennai still remains the hotspot with 552 fresh COVID-19 cases.

Delhi also showed the highest surge with as many as 500 new cases, taking the total count to 10,554. Rajasthan reported 338 new cases, Uttar Pradesh 292 cases, Karnataka 149 cases and Assam 46 cases breaking their respective records of new cases in a single day.

In UP, almost 40% of the total cases reported on Tuesday were linked to returning migrants. Basti district reported 44 new cases, as DM Ashutosh Niranjan confirmed that all cases were those of migrant workers who were quarantined at the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya after their return from Maharashtra. Neighbouring districts of Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Maharajganj and Deoria also reported 14 migrant cases.

In Rajashtan, the coronavirus cases count reached a new high a day after the state government issued fresh guidelines for lockdown 4.0. On Monday, the state reported 305 new cases, taking the total number of cases to 5,845. 5 persons died of the coronavirus infection in Rajasthan, which includes two in Jaipur and one each in Kota, Nagaur and Sikar taking the toll to 143.

A senior health official said that Dungarpur reported the highest number of cases, as 87 migrants were found infected with the coronavirus. They all had travelled by buses from Mumbai and are kept at quarantine facilities.

Gujarat reported 395 positive cases and 25 deaths, taking the states total tally to 12,141 and the death toll to 719. 239 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours and the total number of discharged patients has reached to 5,043. Ahmedabad continues to lead the cases and deaths with 262 cases of total new cases and 21 deaths of total deaths. Surat reported two deaths and Aravalli and Gandhinagar recorded one death each. Gujarat had carried out 5,865 tests to spot new cases. Jayanti Ravi, principal secretary (health), said that the 2 major hospitals in Ahmedabad have already started trials with ayurvedic and homoeopathic medicines with allopathic treatment.
