On Tuesday morning, staffs of Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad gave Catherine Christian, 56, the head nurse, a teary farewell who succumbed to COVID-19. As her mortal residues were placed in a casket, she was given a guard of honor by staff members and Home Guard personnel on duty at the campus as a ‘corona warrior’ who had assisted in the COVID-19 ward.

Dr J P Modi, medical superintendent of Civil Hospital, said that Catherine, who was a resident of Maninagar, had joined GG Hospital in Jamnagar in 1988. She had become a part of the Civil Hospital family in 1996 and since then served the patients from the city since then. Earlier the coronavirus outbreak, she was working in the gynaecology ward. Her colleagues remembered Catherine as a disciplinarian regarding ward cleanliness and management and a true friend to several junior nurses.

A senior Civil Hospital official said that she was given duty in Ward A-1 of the COVID-19 hospital from 26th April to 3rd May. She then took a break for 3 days and then was posted again in the gynaecology ward. On 11th May, she complained of few symptoms and was tested positive. She was admitted immediately to the hospital for treatment.
