On Thursday, a 24-year-old nurse who works at a private hospital in Gurugram tried to commit suicide in her room after her COVID-19 test result came positive. She is undergoing treatment at the hospital.

As per the police officials, the woman lives alone in a rented housing in Jharsa. On Wednesday, her test sample was collected after she developed symptoms for the infection. On Thursday afternoon, she got the report positive stating that she had contracted COVID-19 disease.

Soon after she hanged herself from the ceiling fan, a woman who lives in an adjoining room saw her through the window opening from the common corridor. She immediately raised an alarm and her neighbours came immediately. They broke open the door and took the nurse to the hospital.

ACP (Sadar) Aman Yadav said she is undergoing treatment but did not share other information about her health condition. The hospital too did not comment. Police said it is still unclear why she took this extreme step. The nurse is originally from Kerala and no case has yet been registered.

Reports of people committing suicide over contracting COVID-19 have emerged from various parts of the country, and now from Gurugram.

On 29th April, a 54-year-old man, Satbir Saini, committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan in his house in Ganga Vihar just a day after his wife tested positive for coronavirus. A test was conducted on him too after his death which revealed he was also positive. Saini’s wife was admitted to a private hospital in Prem Nagar for an ulcer treatment when she was tested positive for COVID-19.
