In a systematic review and meta-analysis, Asbaghi et al explored the impact of the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) on cardiovascular risk factors in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

A systematic search using Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane library and PubMed databases was conducted to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) related to the effect of the MedDiet in patients with NAFLD, through July, 2019.

Of 467 publications identified in the primary search, five RCTs were eligible. It was noted that the MedDiet was associated with a significant reduction in serum levels of triglyceride and total cholesterol, and a decrease in body weight and HOMA-IR in comparison to a control diet, among NAFLD patients. However, no significant improvement was noted in the MedDiet group compared with the control group in terms of other variables such as liver enzymes and blood pressure.

The meta-analysis thus put forward the beneficial effects of the MedDiet on some cardiovascular risks factors, as compared to a control diet. The MedDiet could thus be an appropriate strategy to reduce cardiovascular risk factors in NAFLD patients.
