Maharashtra's count of COVID-19 cases surpasses China's count reaching 85,975 with 91 deaths

On Sunday, Maharashtra reported its second-highest single-day surge with 3,007 COVID-19 cases, taking the tally to 85,975. It has surpassed even China’s reported total count of 83,000-odd cases. The State’s death toll has reached 3,060 with 91 deaths reported on Sunday.

According to the Health department, only 43,591 of the coronavirus cases are active with 1,924 patients discharged on Sunday. The total number of recoveries till date is 39,314.

Mumbai’s total count has crossed the 48,000-mark and has reached 48,774 as the city reported 1,420 cases with 61 deaths on Sunday. At present, Mumbai has 25,940 active cases and death toll at 1,638.

Dr. Pradeep Awate, State Surveillance Officer said that the recovery rate had increased to 45.27% while its case mortality rate is at 3.55%.

Pune district reported 6 deaths taking its toll to 406. But, its authorities stated that the toll has already rose to 409. Pune district’s tally has reached 9,705 with a huge spike of more than 400 new cases.

Solapur district reported eight deaths, taking its toll to 104, however the divisional authorities said that it had already reached to 115.

Ulhasnagar and Mira-Bhayander, civic body regions in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) reported 5 deaths taking the death toll to 20 and 39, respectively. Deaths were also reported from Nashik, Jalna and Akola and among various parts of the State.

The upsurge in new cases in Thane in the MMR region continued with 273 cases taking the district’s count to 6,048. Navi Mumbai also reported a similar spike of more than 130 cases, taking the tally to 3,484.

Dr. Awate said that 73.6% of the deaths reported had high-risk co-morbidities such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and asthma. Till now, out of the 5,51,647 laboratory samples, 85,975 (15.8%) are tested positive with almost 14,000 samples tested today across the State. He further said that 5,58,463 people across the State were home quarantined and 28,504 were in institutional quarantine centres. There are almost 3,654 active containment zones.
