A recent article published in Postepi Dematologii i Alergologi stated that atopic dermatitis (AD) – chronic and recurrent inflammatory dermatosis with concomitant intensive pruritus, occurs in both children and adults. The authors elaborated that AD-patients are predisposed to bacterial, viral and fungal skin infections, along with an increased risk of developing food allergies—especially, at an infantile age—allergic rhinitis or bronchial asthma, also known as atopic march.

The increasing prevalence of AD has posed a serious public health problem, that regards not only dermatology and allergology, but also pediatrics and family medicine.

Heeding the Polish Dermatological Society recommendations, the article summarized that the basis for AD treatment and prophylaxis is the restoration of epidermal barrier functions by means of tailored emollients. It was inferred that AD therapies should effectively eliminate clinical symptoms of the condition, prevent exacerbations and complications apart from improving patients quality of life (QoL).
