On Friday, the daily count of COVID-19 in Delhi had crossed 2,000 cases for the first time with 2,137 people tested positive for the coronavirus disease. The total tally of the cases has reached 36,824 in with this highest single-day count.

Delhi has witnessed the highest number of COVID-19 deaths, after Maharashtra and Gujarat reported 3,717 and 1,416 deaths, respectively.

The data shows 741 (61%) deaths are reported in the capital in the last 12 days, from June 1 to June 12. In March, April and May, Delhi had reported 2, 57 and 414 COVID-19 deaths, respectively. The daily frequency of COVID-19 cases has also increased significantly, with more than 1,000 new cases being reported daily since 28th May, except on 1st June.

A senior doctor said that the situation in Delhi is worrying. If the COVID-19 infection continues to spread at the current pace, then the hospitals will run short of beds and a crisis situation will arise. Lockdown or no lockdown, people should only go out only if required. Everyone should take possible precautions, such as wearing masks at all times and washing hands frequently.

Few of the resident’s welfare associations (RWAs), added that they are imposing lockdown measures in their societies to protect residents. Many RWAs are making their own isolation rooms and arranging for oxygen cylinders to manage COVID-19 cases, in case the patients finds it difficult to get a bed in a hospital as the pandemic is getting at its peak.

Health minister Satyendar Jain in a statement said that in view of the increasing COVID-19 cases, Delhi government is making preparations. Beds and ventilators would be increased. The central government has also ensured full cooperation and their hospitals have enough ICU beds. There are almost 13,000 beds in the central government hospitals. They have requested the Centre to use those beds for treatment of COVID-19 patients.

Delhi government has decided to utilise stadiums, banquet and community halls, and also religious places such as dharamshalas to make more beds and run temporary hospitals as well.
