The National Institutes of Health COVID-19 Treatment Guidelines Panel has added a recommendation to use dexamethasone in COVID-19 patients who are mechanically ventilated or require supplemental oxygen.

Based on findings from the RECOVERY trial for hospitalized patients in the United Kingdom, the panel advises the use of the drug at a dose of 6 mg per day for up to 10 days, with a strong recommendation for patients who are mechanically ventilated and a moderate recommendation for those who require supplemental oxygen but are not mechanically ventilated. The panel further recommends against the use of the drug in COVID-19 patients who do not require supplemental oxygen.
