Urticaria is a mast cell-related disease that can cause severe itching. The lifetime incidence of urticaria is approximately 20% in general population. The objective of this study is to assess the risk of urticaria in geriatric stroke patients who had received influenza vaccination (IV).

Overall, 192,728 patients with newly diagnosed stroke aged over 65 years were included in a cohort that was obtained from Taiwans National Health Insurance between 2000 and 2008. In all, 9890 stroke patients who received IV and 9890 susceptibility score-matched stroke patients who did not receive IV were identified.

Both the IV and non-IV groups were monitored for one year controlling the time preference and urticaria occasions were closely identified in the follow-up period.

In the follow-up period of a year, stroke patients with IV had a significant high risk of urticaria as compared with non-IV stroke patients. Elevated risk of urticaria in stroke patients with IV was observed in both sexes, in patients aged 65-84 years, patients with comorbid conditions, and different time intervals of follow-up. Stroke patients with hemorrhage who are vaccinated and those who had received intensive care were at a higher risk of urticaria as compared to those without IV.

The study concluded that receiving influenza vaccination might be linked with an elevated risk of urticaria in stroke patients.
