Cardiovascular events could significantly heighten the risk of cancer recurrence and cancer death among survivors of early breast cancer, suggested a review of 1,700 patients.

The risk of breast cancer recurrence was found to increase by 59% and cancer-specific death by 60% in patients who had a heart attack, stroke, or heart failure following cancer diagnosis and treatment. Laboratory studies with a preclinical model of breast cancer demonstrated that experimental myocardial infarction led to an immunosuppressive effect on a type of bone marrow cell and decreased the bodys ability to identify and attack cancer cells.
