Common BP drugs dont increase COVID-19 severity: Study

Washington: A class of drugs that is commonly used to treat patients with hypertension, and heart disease does not increase the risk of developing severe COVID-19 as previously feared, according to a study in mice. Scientists, including those from Northwestern University in the US, said there have been widespread concerns that the drugs -- ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) -- might cause an increase in the human cell surface receptor protein ACE2 which the novel coronavirus uses to enter and infect cells.Earlier studies had cautioned that this class of drugs could possibly increase the risk for the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, infection and elevate COVID-19 severity. ,However, the new findings, published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, revealed a decrease, not an increase, in ACE2 in mice kidney membranes, and no change in lung membranes. ....read more

Brinton Pharma gets nod for selling covid-19 tablet

NEW DELHI : Brinton Pharmaceuticals has got the approval of the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) for marketing favipiravir under the brand name Faviton for the management of mild to moderate covid-19 patients, the company said on Thursday.The emerging favourable global clinical evidence suggests that favipiravir is an effective treatment option in the management of mild to moderate covid-19, said company officials. This medication is administered orally and thus is more convenient than intravenously administered medicines.In India, favipiravir was first approved by the regulatory authorities in June under emergency use authorization to treat covid-19 patients, the company said.

Recently, NPPA allowed 50 per cent price increase for heparin injection, which is also an essential medicine for the treatment of COVID-19 patientsUnderstanding the rising cost of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) in the country and the industry’s dependency on China for API and its impact on certain essential medicines, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has recently announced a one-time price increase of 50 per cent for heparin injection for 1000IU and 5000IU/ ml. Although, it is a time-bound exercise for six months – until December 31, 2020, the industry observers are raising concern over short-term consideration of price revision and are in opinion that more drugs require similar consideration.

Fear and panic over Covid-19 prevented a dignified burial of a homoeopathic doctor in Kandhamal district of Odisha as villagers did not allow the burial, suspecting him to have died due to Covid-19.The 55-year-old homoeopathic doctor of G Udaygiri block in Kandhamal district fell ill on Wednesday night after his blood pressure spiked. He was immediately admitted to the Community Health Centre of G Udaygiri. However, he passed away while being taken to the district headquarters hospital in Phulbani town.“As his body was brought back to his village in Mallikpadi, the locals did not allow it to be buried there fearing that the doctor had succumbed to Covid-19. The doctor’s body was finally buried in an isolated patch of land around two kilometres away,” said Kailash Dandapat, an NGO worker in Kandhamal district.

A30-year-old doctor at Aligarhs Deen Dayal Hospital was arrested on Wednesday after a woman being treated for coronavirus at the hospital alleged that he tried to rape her.“We received a complaint from a woman patient admitted at Deen Dayal Hospital alleging that a doctor sexually assaulted her within the hospital premises. A police team was sent to the hospital The doctor, who himself was in quarantine, was arrested. We are questioning hospital authorities Further investigation is on,” a senior police officer told The Indian Express. ,Police have obtained CCTV footage in which the accused, Dr Tufail Ahmad, who was on Covid duty, can be seen entering the isolation ward where the woman was admitted. The woman alleged that the doctor attempted sexual assault twice during the period of admission, on the pretext of medical examination. The case was registered under section 354 (molestation) and 376 (2) (advantage of position to commit rape) at the local police station.
