A junior doctor was attacked by relatives of a female patient at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Telanganas Warangal. The female patient was admitted in the emergency unit due to severe injury on her leg.

Since Saturday midnight, approximately 300 junior doctors and interns are on strike protesting against the attack on their colleague. They have demanded strict action against the attackers and to provide protection for all doctors.

The incident took place in the day, as soon as the attending doctor informed the patient’s relatives that it wasa severe injury due to an iron needle which was found inside her legand suggested that she should be shifted to the X-ray machine unit before performing any surgery.

S Ravi Shankar, Telangana Junior Doctors Association General Secretary told The New Indian Express that the patient’s attendants shouted at the doctor and threatened him with their associations to the ruling party leaders.

On Sunday, the doctors boycotted emergency services and raised slogans in the hospital premises demanding their protection and strict action against the suspected attackers. Shankar said that the higher authorities of the hospital still have not taken any action regarding this incident. The police, however, reached the spot and arrested the attendants of the patient, though the main accused is still absconding.

In April, the hospital had reported a similar incident, where the doctors were allegedly attacked after a patient with multiple ailments died of COVID-19. Two of his family members allegedly attacked the doctors holding them responsible for their patient’s death. The medical employees at the hospital had mentioned such violent incidents are happening frequently during this COVID-19 period. Hence, they have requested protection and assurance from the hospital authorities and also from the chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao.
