Doctors appointed at Kolkata Police stations by IMA for managing COVID patients

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has decided to as sign at least 2-4 doctors in each and every Kolkata police station to support the force in saving the critical COVID patients in the eastern metropolis.

On Wednesday, West Bengal witn essed 2, 725 new cases of COVID-19 and Kolkata alone had contributed approximately 1000 patients. In Kolkata, there are almost 79 police stations under Kolkata Polices jurisdiction that are allocated into eight divisions and are headed by a Deputy Commissioner rank officer.

IMA President Shantanu Sen, also a Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP, said that a suggestion about appointing doctors at police stations was given to chief minister Mamata Banerjee and it was approved immediately. He highlighted the difficulty of elderly citizens as many of them are staying alone and have nobody to call other than the police for any help if they are infected with coronavirus.

He said that several cases are observed as senior citizens staying alone in high-rise apartments have been infected by coronavirus and are not receiving any medical support. These senior citizens then call the local police for assistance. This issue can be addressed if doctors can work together with the Kolkata Police in this time of pandemic.

The Kolkata police has issued a detailed standard operating procedure for its work forces to fight against the coronavirus pandemic in a better way. The officer said that they are focusing on increasing the space inside the police stations to maintain social distancing with those visiting them. For this purpose, they had also set up temporary police stations around neighboring vacant houses or lodges close to the police stations.
