India surpasses Brazil and becomes the 2nd worst-hit COVID-19 country

India has exceeded Brazil in the total number of coronavirus cases and become the second worst-hit COVID-19 nation after the US. According to Worldo meter data, India has 4,204,613 total coronavirus cases, out of which 882,497 are active cases, at present.

India has reported the highest number of daily COVID-19 cases in the world for the past four weeks. On 6 September alone, it reported more than 90,000 new COVID-19 cases.

This massive upsurge comes during a time when the Indian government is reopening its economy again. Metro services in few cities such as Delhi, Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata had resumed today under Unlock 4.0.

On 17th July, the country recorded 10 lakh cases and it doubled to 20 lakhs in 20 days on 7th August. It added an additional 10 lakh cases on 23rd August. India has crossed the 41 lakhs total number of cases with a highest single-day record of 90,000 cases on 6th September.

At present, Maharashtra is leading the active number of coronavirus cases in the country with almost 2,36,208 cases followed by Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Naduand Uttar Pradesh as of 6 September 2020. These states have recorded the highest number of coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours. Also, these states account for 60% of the total active COVID-19 cases in the country.

Though, India has the second-highest cases in the world, it also has the lowest case fatality rate (CFR) at 2%, as per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. On 1st August India’s CFR was 2.15%, which has reduced to 1.72% on 6th September.
