Doctors at the Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Hyderabad successfully conducted a double lung transplant surgery on a COVID-19 patient. It is the 1st of its kind procedure in India.

On Friday, the 32-year-old patient from Chandigarh received lungs from a brain-dead person of Kolkata and was discharged from the hospital. Sandeep Attawarled the team of doctors, who is considered a pioneer in transplant surgeries of heart and lung in India.

Rizwan alias Monu was suffering from sarcoidosis, which had affected his lungs significantly, resulting in fibrosis of the lungs. The doctors said that his condition worsened rapidly and double lung transplant was the only permanent choice of treatment.

The situation got more worse as the patient contracted coronavirus while waiting for a double lung transplant. His oxygen requirement had increased from 15 liters/minute to 50 liters/min for the past eight weeks.

Attawar said that the patient had a severe case of lung sarcoidosis and after contracting COVID-19, it complicated his risky lung condition. Fortunately, a match was found in a person declared brain dead in Kolkata to his lungs and the harvested lungs were then airlifted to Hyderabad for saving the life of the patient. The procedure was complex and had very little room for errors. Only a timely transplant of lungs had helped them to save the patient. Good outcomes are sometimes difficult to achieve as such patients are extremely sick, under nourished and are also bed-ridden before the transplant. Post discharge, he would require close monitoring, a bio bubble environment with careful drug control for six weeks.

Sandeep Attawaris a veteran in the field of transplant surgeries and has an experience of more than 24 years. He has performed over 12,000 heart surgeries and more than 250 transplant surgeries for lungs, heart, and artificial heart implants so far.
