WHO reports a single day spike of over 307,000 global COVID-19 cases

On Sunday, the World Health Organization had reported a record of one-day increase in global coronavirus cases with the total number of cases rising by 307,930 in only 24 hours.

According to the agency’s website, the major increases were reported from India, the United States and Brazil. Deaths due to COVID-19 have risen by 5,537 reaching a total of 917,417 deaths.

India had reported 94,372 fresh cases, which was followed by the United States with 45,523 new cases and Brazil with 43,718 cases. Both the United States and India reported more than 1,000 new deaths and Brazil reported 874 deaths in the past 24 hours.

The earlier WHO record for new cases was 306,857 on 6th September. The agency had reported a record of 12,430 deaths on 17th April.

According to a Reuters tally, India is leading the world in maximum number of new cases reported every single day and has set a global record last week with 97,570 cases in a single day. In few parts of India, the supply for medical oxygen is hard to find as the total number of coronavirus cases has exceeded 4.75 million. Alone, the United States has recorded above 6.5 million cases.

According to a Reuters analysis, COVID-19 infections are still growing in 58 countries, including rapid surges in Argentina, Morocco, Indonesia, Spain and Ukraine. The number of new cases is dropping in the United States and has reduced around 44% from a peak of above 77,000 new cases reported on 16th July. Also, COVID-19 cases in Brazil are dropping down.
