A sage presented a prince with three small dolls. The prince said that he was not a girl and asked the sage why was he giving him dolls. The sage replied that this was a gift for a future king. He asked the prince to look carefully; there was a hole in the ear of each doll.

The sage then gave him a piece of string and asked him to pass it through each doll.

The prince picked up the first doll and put the string into the ear, which came out from the other ear. The sage then explained that this represents one type of person. He added that whatever you tell such a person, it comes out from the other ear. He doesn’t retain anything.

The prince then put the string into the second doll, which came out from the mouth. The sage explained that this was the second type of person; whatever you tell him, he tells everybody else.

The prince then picked up the third doll and put the string in its ear. This time, the string did not come out. The sage now said that this was the third type of person. Whatever you tell him, it gets locked up within him and never comes out.

The prince then enquired who among these is the best type of person. The sage now gave him a fourth doll. As the prince put the string into the doll, it came out from the other ear. The sage asked him to repeat the process. This time the string came out from the mouth. The third time, it did not come out at all.

The sage explained that this is the best type of person. In order to be trustworthy, a man must know when not to listen, when to remain silent and when to speak out, he said.
