On Friday, the National Medical Commission (NMC) was formed with the release of notification in the Gazette of India. The commission will soon be replaced with the Medical Council of India (MCI). Dr Suresh Chandra Sharma, Prof. of ENT department, AIIMS, is appointed as the first Chairman of the National Medical Commission. The President of the commission would be in office for three years or till he reaches the age of 70 years.

The central government has also appointed Rakesh Kumar Vats as general secretary of MCIs governing board and secretary of NMC for the same period of time.

NMC is the new medical education regulator that is going to replace the Medical Council of India (MCI). In 2018, the decision to dissolve MCI was taken. The National Medical Commission Act, 2019 was already approved in August 2019. Consequently, the NMC will have a Chairman, 10 ex-official members along with 22 part-time members. The establishment of the National Medical Commission is intended to access quality and affordable medical education. In addition, it will also ensure the availability of adequate and high-quality medical specialists in all parts of the country.
