Diaper dermatitis is a common skin condition in neonates. It is the result of interaction between multiple factors, among which the most important is prolonged contact of the skin with urine and feces, which causes skin irritation and damage. The composition of skin microbiota in the diaper area is specific and differs from that of other places on the skin

According to a study published in Pediatr Dermatol, understanding the significance of the barrier function of the skin of preterm and term neonates is crucial in effective neonatal skin and diaper care. Diaper dermatitis are best managed by prevention. Recent evidence suggests that super‐absorbent diapers and barrier creams are effective for prevention and treatment of diaper dermatitis. Barrier creams carry benefit both in prevention and cure.

The review of a systemic study indicates that cleansing of the diaper area using baby wipes have comparable effects on diapered skin. Bathing with a liquid baby cleanser twice weekly seems comparable with water alone.

Supporting the skin barrier with barrier creams in infants prone to diaper dermatitis along with frequent diaper changes and good cleansing practices represent effective preventive strategies
