International Day of the Girl Child is observed every year to celebrate the significance, power, and potential of girls across the world. This day emphasizes girls’ needs and the problems they can face, and drives efforts to meet these needs and fulfil their rights, in partnership with them.
There has been considerable progressover the last two decades to ensure that every girl is able to grow and develop in good health, still a lot remains to be done. For instance, around 12 million girls are married before the age 18 every year;one in five girls across the globe has experienced sexual violence;in Eastern and Southern Africa, close to 80% of new HIV infections among adolescents are seen in girls.
The 2020 theme of this day is “My voice, our equal future.” (WHO)
