On Monday, Soumya Swaminathan, the WHO chief scientist, said that the World Health Organization (WHO) expects that a vaccine against the novel coronavirus disease would be ready for registration by the end of 2020 or by next year at the earliest.

Swaminathan told the reporters they have around 40 vaccine candidates in some stages of clinical trials and out of them 10 are in the phase three trials. These late-stage clinical trials will state about the efficacy and the safety of the vaccines. Accordingly, they are making a guess or predicting while observing the results of a trial when it started and when it is expected to have sufficient data to submit to the regulators, which would be earliest from December 2020 into the early part of 2021.

Several countries are developing vaccines from the start of the pandemic that started earlier this year, but not one has yet passed the WHO-approved phase 3 trials. Many vaccines are projected to be registered with the WHO by this year end.

According to Johns Hopkins University, up to now, over 37 million people have been infected with the coronavirus infection worldwide with more than 1.07 million fatalities.
