CMAAO Coronavirus Facts and Myth Buster: 3 COVID-19 Trials Paused for Safety

With input from Dr Monica VasudevThree COVID-19 Trials Have Been Paused for Safety1.Two late-stage clinical trials - Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine and Eli Lilly’s monoclonal antibodies study - were halted owing to possible safety concerns. Just a month earlier, AstraZeneca’s vaccine trial was put on hold after two volunteers became seriously ill. 2.Eli Lilly’s antibody drug pause is rarer, and worrisome. The trial was testing the treatment on hospitalized sick patients, a group in which deterioration in health would not be surprising. So, if a trial like that one is paused, the safety concerns must have been significant. 3.Johnson & Johnson halted its trial due to an unexplained illness. Eli Lilly’s trial was halted because of a health difference between the group that received the drug and the group that was given a placebo, which has not yet been disclosed. ....read more

Gargling: Breaking the chain of infection

Since 31st December in 2019, when the COVID-19 pandemic was first identified as a cluster of cases of pneumonia of unknown origin, more than 37 million cases and 1 million deaths worldwide have been recorded.1 COVID-19 is a highly transmissible disease, facilitating its rapid spread.2 The main route of transmission is human to human through direct inhalation of respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes.3 The virus also enters the body through the mouth, which functions as a reservoir for the virus. A study published in Nature confirmed active viral replication in the throat with very high pharyngeal (throat) shedding of the virus during the first week of the illness, when the infection is still mild. Infectious viral particles were isolated from throat swabs. The peak levels were reached before the fifth day and were more than 1,000 times higher than with SARS, making COVID-19 a much more contagious disease.4 ....read more

India Coronavirus Dispatch: ASHA workers face notices, FIRs after protests

Business Standard

What moviegoing is like now: After months of being shut down and running campaigns like #UnlockCinemaSaveJobs, theatres in India have finally opened up. Theatres are now showing recent hits as no new releases have hit the big screens yet. All transactions at the cinema are now mandatorily cashless. All tickets are also paperless. There is a standard temperature check at the entrance to the halls. Anyone who displays symptoms of Covid will be refunded in full, according to officials. Sanitiser dispensers are also placed at various points across the halls. Wearing masks and maintaining social distance is mandatory. Most interestingly, popcorn is now served with a lid on the container. Further, the interval time for films has been extended by 15 minutes to make room for a more intensive sanitisation process.
