On Thursday, the active COVID-19 cases in the country had fallen below the 6 lakh mark, with the total number of cases dropping by more than a lakh in only eight days. For the first time since the coronavirus pandemic had spread across the country in April, Maharashtra was displaced as the state who recorded the highest number of daily cases above any seven-day period. Now, Kerala has emerged as the state with the highest number of fresh cases in the past 10 days, with the seven-day progressing average of the state and has overtaken Maharashtra this Sunday.

Kerala has taken over the uncertain mantle of the No. 1 state in new COVID-19 cases due to the steady drop in infections in Maharashtra and increase in cases in the southern state. In Maharashtra, the 7-day average has dropped by more than two-third from a peak of 22,149 on 17th September to 6,158 on 28th October.

On 15th October, Kerala’s graph peaked at 8,440, and showed a marginal drop since then to 7,089 on 28th October. According to the database collected from state government figures, active number of cases in the country stood at 5, 98,946 on Thursday,

On Thursday, India reported 49,070 new cases, taking the total number of cases to 80, 88,182. This was a slight drop from Wednesday’s total of 50,224 new cases. The death toll was 554, the highest in the last five days.

Delhi registered 5,739 fresh cases on Thursday, which is the highest single-day count till now, during a third rush in the pandemic in the capital city. A health official said that Maharashtras coronavirus total count on Thursday reached 16, 66,668 with 5,902 fresh cases.
