On Wednesday, the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) issued a notice to two out of the three accused doctors in the Dr Payal Tadvi abetment to suicide case in quest of their response within 15 days on accusations of harassment that was suffered by the deceased doctor.

MMC president, Dr Shivkumar Utture, said that the council’s ethical committee will hold a hearing soon to decide whether the medical licenses of the two accused doctors namely, Dr Ankita Khandelwal and Dr Bhakti Mehare to be suspended or cancelled.

Payal Tadvi, a second-year gynaecology student at BYL Nair hospital, committed suicide on 22nd May, 2019, and left behind a note accusing her three seniors Mehare, Khandelwal and Dr Hema Ahuja for harassing her at work.

Mehareand Khandelwal both are registered with MMC and on Wednesday, the MMC registrar issued a 15-day notice to both the doctors to provide a detailed answer to the allegations that are levelled by Tadvi’s mother Abeda Tadvi in her complaint to the council in 2019.

The council is a quasi-judicial body, having the power to permanently suspend or cancel the license to practice from several months to few years.
