Socks coated in zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) can prevent bromodosis (commonly known as foot odour) and pitted keratolysis (bacterial infection responsible for smelly feet). The new research presented at the 29th EADV virtual has significant implications in reducing the negative effect of this embarrassing condition and its impact on the quality of life.

In the research, the ZnO-NPs-coated socks were trialled in a real-life scenario. The double-blind, randomized, controlled trial included 148 cadets at the Thai Naval Rating School. The results of the trial showed that the antibacterial efficacy of the ZnO-NPs along with its safety and compatibility when in contact with human skin, made it the most appropriate choice for incorporating it into textiles such as socks to prevent unpleasant smell.

The study authors concluded that those with ZnO-NPs-coated socks had significantly less foot odour. On the other hand, the participants with uncoated-socks had increased chances of developing pitted keratolysis compared to those with ZnO-NPs-coated socks.
