Obese patients lost a considerable amount of weight following transcatheter bariatric embolotherapy (TBE) of the left gastric artery (LGA).

In a randomized trial, the total body weight loss reached 7.4 kg 6 months after TBE in 19 patients. This represented a significant improvement over the 3.0 kg loss achieved by 18 controls following a sham procedure. Results were found to be similar on per-protocol analysis, excluding the ones with unsuccessful embolization and comorbidities that met the exclusion criteria, according to the LOSEIT (Lowering Weight in Severe Obesity by Embolization of the Gastric Artery Trial) group. Total body weight loss was maintained at 12 months with TBE. TBE was also shown to be a safe procedure with minimal complications.
