Among its various effects, coffee is also known to have links with skin-related disorders. It is suggested that coffee may worsen the condition of people who have acne. The caffeine present in coffee may alter the body’s normal hormone levels and may raise concerns for those who drink coffee regularly. It has been revealed in studies that caffeine can raise the levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. The increased level of stress is known to lead to frequency of acne. Besides, cortisol is also linked with increased production of sebum, or oil, which may cause acne. In individuals with chronic high levels of cortisol, several changes, including weight gain, depression, digestive problems, and anxiety, are seen. These changes also have associations with acne. Caffeine also affects sleep; lack of quality sleep can cause the body to release more cortisol, which can increase inflammation. Inflammation can affect the skin, leading to aggravation of acne.
