Pimecrolimus, a topical calcineurin inhibitor, is reported to have a beneficial effect in periorificial dermatitis in adults. However, the efficacy data in children are limited. In a retrospective study of 72 children with periorificialdermatitis, topical calcineurin inhibitors were linked with the clearance of dermatitis in two-thirds of the children treated with monotherapy and majority of those treated in conjunction with other therapies. The adverse events in the study were reported to be mild and rare. The limitation of the study, however, was the lack of a control group since periorificial dermatitis is also known to improve spontaneously.
