Diabetes is No. 1 accidental finding during Covid-19

New Delhi: Paramjeet Singh (name changed), a healthy 34-year-old marketing professional, developed fever and cough three weeks ago. Tests confirmed he had Covid-19. After days of home isolation when his condition continued to deteriorate, Singh was rushed to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH), where a battery of blood tests was carried out to assess the vital parameters before putting him on steroids and antiviral medications. The result showed that he had diabetes. “His blood sugar levels and HbA1c (shows the average glucose attached to haemoglobin for previous three months) were significantly raised,” said Dr Atul Gogia, senior consultant, internal medicine department, SGRH.

Confession

Confession is one of the many ways of detoxifying the mind. It has its roots in Hindu mythology but today, it is mainly practiced in Christian religion as a hardcore ritual. Among Christians, one usually goes to a Church and confesses to the Bishop without disclosing his or her identity. In Hindu mythology, confession is a routine spiritual practice. People can confess to their Guru, to their God in the temple or their mentor. Confession can also be done to a plant (Peepal tree), an animal (dog or a cat), or birds. It is a common saying that taking a dip in Yamuna or Ganga removes all your sins. The dip in water involves a ritual of confessing guilt every time we take a dip. ....read more

EU drugs watchdog expects first application for COVID-19 vaccine in days

expresspharma.in

Europe’s drugs watchdog said on Thursday it expects to receive the first application for conditional marketing approval for a COVID-19 vaccine “in the coming days”, the latest step towards making a shot available outside the United States. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) did not name the company it expects to file the application, but Pfizer Inc and BioNTEch are the most advanced in the regulatory process among the three companies that have published late-stage trial data for their vaccines. The companies applied on November 20 for US approval and the UK said it has asked its medical regulator to assess the vaccine for its suitability.

Coronavirus vaccine in India: Which candidate is most suitable, timeline and all you need to know

financialexpress.com

COVID-19 vaccine in India: Several coronavirus vaccine candidates have been releasing encouraging trends and results over the past few weeks. But what does that mean for India, and where does India stand in the procurement of doses for its over 130 crore population? Several reports by IE have cited experts to explain what the encouraging trends in vaccine development mean for India. The surprising efficacy rates of vaccines:IE quoted leading medical scientist in India Dr Gagandeep Kang as saying that the 90% efficacy rates of several vaccines was very surprising because in cases of mucosal infections there is less protection than in infections at other sites. Dr Kang gave the example of influenza vaccines which offer about 60% efficacy in a good season, with this figure going much lower in cases where strains do not match. This is why the scientists were not expecting the vaccines to perform as well as they have as per the early data. The doctor further stated that further trials and analysis into these vaccines would reveal that these efficacy levels would not be maintained. However, the medical scientist also assured that for the reasonable timeframe, the rates are not going to decline drastically.

COVID scare not over yet

thehindu.com

Telangana was fortunate that COVID-19 cases did not spike even after people gathered for the recent festivals and the floods laid a trail of destruction. However, the scare is not over yet. State government officials, healthcare professionals, NGOs and several others are watching the campaigning for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections with bated breath as thousands of people are coming together for canvassing, leaving nothing to chance. And sometimes, some of them are not even wearing masks. Another factor that can compound the number of cases is the winter season, as viruses survive longer in cold temperatures.
