The Serum Institute of India issued a statement on 29th November 2020 regarding a participant in its COVID vaccine trial falling seriously ill during the trial. The statement read, "there is no link between the vaccine trial and the medical condition of the volunteer."

They said that the legal notice sent by the family of the participant was "malicious and misconceived," and the man was "falsely laying the blame for his medical problems on the vaccine trial."

Serum Institute has cleared that the medical team informed the trial participant that the complications he suffered were independent of the vaccine trial. Despite this, the man went public with the allegations, and it reflected that this was "for an oblique pecuniary motive." The company will seek damages over INR 100 crore.
