Metabolic syndrome is characterized by several comorbidities. A study evaluated the effect of metabolic syndrome on few main emergency general surgery (EGS) procedures. For this, data was procured from the American College of Surgeons-the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database from 2005 to 2017. Patients with obesity, hypertension, and diabetes were defined as having metabolic syndrome. Out of 7,52,023 cases, 41,788 (5.6%) metabolic syndrome cases were identified. The results revealed that significant outcomes were superficial infection [odds ratio (OR): 1.51], pulmonary complications (OR: 1.17), renal complications (OR: 1.82), cumulative morbidity (OR: 1.22), and hospital readmission (OR: 1.41).The researchers of this study concluded that for patients undergoing emergency general surgery procedures, metabolic syndrome enhances the risk of comorbidities and hospital readmission.
