A two-and-a-half-year-old boy named Jash Oza became the youngest cadaver donor from Gujarat. His multiple organs were donated and has saved five lives included two four-year-old children from Russia and Ukraine.

On 9th December, Jash Oza fell from the second-floor balcony of his neighbour’s house in Shanti Palace of Bhatar area in Surat. Doctors said that he suffered brain haemorrhage and swelling and on 14th December, he was declared brain dead.

Jash’s heart, lungs, liver, both kidneys along with eyes were donated as his parents Sanjeev Oza and Archana Oza agreed for the noble cause. Nilesh Mandlewala, founder of Donate Life, which is a voluntary organization encouraging organ donation confirmed this.

Jash’s heart and lungs were transported to Chennai via air in 160 minutes. The heart was transplanted in a 4-year-old child from Russia and the lungs were transplanted into a 4-year-old child from Ukraine in MGM Hospital, Chennai.

Mandlewala told TOI that the family was devastated after doctors said that their little boy was brain dead. Sanjeev has been creating awareness about cadaver donations and in a difficult situation, he took this decision of organ donation.

Jash’s mother was very hopeful of his recovery as he once uttered the word ‘mummy.’ However, she was explained that he was medically dead and his vital organs won’t be of any use if they wait for long. She got convinced and informed them that she wants to see Jash alive in many people.

Dr. Pranjal Modi, State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) convener was informed for further procedure. The kidneys were transported to Ahmedabad’s Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre via a special green corridor by road. One kidney was transplanted in a 13-year-old girl from Surendranagar and another kidney into a 17-year-old girl from Surat. A two-year-old girl from Bhavnagar got his liver receiving a new life.

Sanjeev Oza is a journalist with a local business newspaper and the couple have a 6-year-old daughter Kiyara.
