Weekly drop in COVID-19 cases by 17%, sharpest decline so far in India

Coronavirus infections and deaths related to it has continued to fall in Indiain the past 14 weeks after the pandemic had peaked. COVID-19 cases registered a 17.3% decline in this week as compared to the previous seven days, thus making it the sharpest weekly drop in percentage till now.

India reported 171,520 new cases from December 14-20 week, which is the lowest since June 29 to July 5 week. This is the 6th straight week of dropping cases since the coronavirus infections had peaked in mid-September.

The weekly count had dropped to its lowest in more than six months, with almost 2,444 deaths in the country in the last seven days.

The death count in Indiais steadily dropping and this week’s cases were about 12.4% lesser than the previous week, as the number stood at 2,789. At present, the weekly deaths from the coronavirus infection stand at 30% of the peak time. India had reported its highest weekly count of 8,175 on 13th – 20th September.

The country had reported 351 deaths per day in this week on an average as opposed to 1,168 during September 13-20. Also, the daily average of new cases in the last week was 24,500, reducing below the 25,000 mark for the first time since June 28-July 5. During the pandemic’s peak time, India was reporting an average of above 92,000 cases. The recent numbers are nearly a fourth (26.6%) of the peak. India recorded 24,833 new cases on Sunday, with the total numbers from Assam were awaited till close to midnight. There were 324 deaths reported during the day, which is the lowest single-day count since 8th June.

The active COVID-19 cases dropped marginally to 3 lakhs on Sunday. The total number of recoveries had rose to a little more than 96 lakhs. Maintaining their trend of the past week, Kerala reported the highest number of new cases at 5,711, which was followed by Maharashtra (3,811 cases), Bengal (1,978 cases) and Uttar Pradesh (1,247 cases). Maharashtra reported the highest mortalities at 98.
