Janus kinase may predict the risk of psoriasis

In a new study, it was found that patients who have the G allele in the JAK 1 gene have twice the risk of developing psoriasis, and for those with the JAK3 allele, the risk rises by almost two times.

The variant sin Janus kinase (JAK)1 rs310241 and JAK3 rs3008 may raise the susceptibility to psoriasis. Clinical studies have demonstrated JAK inhibition to improve diseases (like psoriasis, vitiligo, and alopecia areata). However, few studies have assessed how genetic changes or polymorphisms in the JAK genes could affect psoriasis.

In the study, investigators used the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism technique to screen the samples for nucleotide polymorphisms in JAK1 rs310241 and JAK3 rs3008. They noted that GG (homozygous) genotypes of JAK1 rs310241 and JAK3 rs3008 provided approximately 7.7 times and 3.3 times high risk for psoriasis, respectively. The discovery of these polymorphisms may help predict which patients are at high risk of developing psoriasis in the future.
